Fishing Reports

5 February 2012
Its Super Bowl Sunday !!! As most of you know Im a Bills fan . So that means I dislike the Patriots so GO GAINTS !!!
Now on the fishing scene . The snow is all gone again . As most of this winter it's more like spring . All the run off made the tribs very high & muddy last week , as well as the Lower Niagara River & the Niagara Bar . But the good news is things have cleared up big time .
I've got a trip planned to fish the Niagara Bar on tuesday . If you have a boat this is the real hot spot in the area . Both lake are Erie 36 & Ontario 37 .
There is good news for the Upper Niagara River , they are going to do some work on Motor Island , read the link !!!! http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communities/grand-island/article721078.ece
On tuesday 7 February I will be with Sal from Koyote Ugly Spoons , at the NY Walleye Asso meeting . At the American Legion Post 1041 533 Amherst St in Buffalo at 7:30 pm . Hope to see you there , to check out the Newest Hot Spoons from WNY !!!! All are 100 % Made In America !!!!

Winter to Spring , Spring To Winter what a messed up winter here in Western New York !!! From this past Wednesday with almost a 1 inches of rain . Today Sunday snowing and all white !! But the good thing is all of the tribs should all be open on both lakes & fishable . That's if there not running high & muddy !!!
As in last week's report the good hot spot is the Niagara Bar , that's if you have a boat !! My nephew Bob & his friend were out last Sunday ; they did very well boating 2 Lakers & 5 Browns they loss about 6 more fish . All the Browns were in that 5 to 8 lb ranger . Bob 's Laker was around 17 lbs and his friend was around 10 . They were only out a short time because of the 5 foot rollers they had out there , and his friend was starting to get sick . That happens if you are used to it . They had no live minnows so they were useing Gupl Smelt 3 inches Minnows !!! Bob said they were just hammmering it !!! The pics at the bottom is my nephew Bob with his Laker about 17 lbs !!! ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

Note: Officials in Michigan said this month they will reduce stocking number of Chinooks by more the 50 percent for Lake Huron . The alewife number have plummeted in recent years . the depatment will plant 693,000 Chinook fingerlings in the lake in 2012 , down from the 1.5 million in past years . The deline of aleives & Chinook Slamon illustrates the dramaic effect of species invasions on the Great Lakes ecosystems !!!!
22 January 2011
Winter returned last week , but come monday it will be spring again . Temps near 50 and rain , the whole week will be above normal !! The tribs will be running high with all the run off . The tribs all have fish in them on both lakes . Lake temps are Erie 35 & Ontario 37 .
If you have a boat the Lower Niagara River and the Niagara Bar are the hot spots !! They are picking up good numbers of Browns & Steelheads in the Lower Niagara River . Out on the Bar it's Browns & Lakers !!!

This winter has been more like spring then cold snowy winter !!!!! And the long range forecast doesn't look good for snow or cold . But on the bright side , if you like chaseing fish all the tribs on both lake are open . Most all of them have fish in them just pick one !!
Last February was the Wilson Harbor Ice Fishing Derby and it was a big hit . This years looks like it will be canceled because of NO ICE !!! Lake Erie & Ontario are 39 .

18 December 2011
Well we got rain !!! It was over an inch & all the tribs are a mud hole . All the tribs on both lakes have fish in them . With Chirstmas around the corner , with temp above normal , & with the tribs clearing up . There will be a good number of guys out fishing . And with both lakes water temps still warm for this time of year , Erie 43 & Ontario 45 , it will help the fishing as well . A good call would be any of the pires on both lakes & casting spinners or spoons !! Just on Ontario make sure you don't have a north wind or you well get very wet .
With all the tribs having fish in them you just need to pick one , you should catch fish . On the bad news report , the White River Fish Hatchery has just made an executive decision - to destroy all the Lake Trout for the 2012 stocking due to the presence of desease . As a result , Lake Ontario will not receive ANY Lake Trout stocking for NY in 2012 . But the good news was that the Allegany National Fish Hatchery is back up and running again in Warren PA . They expect to be stocking fish again in 2013 !!! ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~
11December 2011
The weather took a turn here late last week . Snow & colder temps , but by early to mid week warmer temps & big run off will be happing !! There will be rain again by the end of the week as well . All the tribs on both lakes have fish in them . But they may not be fishable till later in the week . But as winter goes up & down the weather should settle down . The Ontario tribs have good numbers of Browns & Steelheads . The Erie tribs also have good numbers in all of them as well . Both of the lakes are still very warm for this time of year , they both are 45 .
On the local front . There a new company in Niagara Falls NY , its the Koyote Ugly Spoon Company owner is Sal Amuso . All the lures are handcrafted in the USA . He makes spoons for both Lake Erie & Ontario . They don't have a website yet . But you can contact them by e- mail or phone its listed on my resoures & links page . They also can be found on Facebook . ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

4 December 2011
The weather here is still great . Rain is in the forecast from late sunday till wednesday !! Could mean tribs could be blown out !! Most of the tribs on both lakes have a good amount of water in them . There are good numbers of Browns and some Steelheads & Cohos in most of the Ontario tribs . The Lake Erie numbers of steelheads will only get better as the weeks go on . You can chase fish on both lake tribs just pick one . They all have fish in them . The crowds number on all the major tribs should dropped by now !!! But they could be up in some areas because of the great weather we are having !!! Both great lakes are warm for this time of year Erie 47 Ontario 53 .
The Lower Niagara got a 15,000 surplus stocking of Rainbows on 28 November . As well in Barcelona on Lake Erie on 18 November . All the fish come from the hatchery in Bath NY.
Hoping you enjoy the pics of my Cohos I got last week 31 & 34 inches !!! ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

27 November 2011
Most of the NY State guys & gals are still chasing deer . But for those of you that what to chase fish we've got them . Most or all of the tribs have water in them , plus we have more rain in the forecast from today thru wednesday . The weather here is more like spring them late fall pushing winter . Temps are in the high 50's pushing close to 60 .
The Lake Erie tribs are all fishable as well . Just like in years passed just pick one for Buffalo to the PA line . Both Lakes Erie & Ontario are at 48 .
The big crowds should start to wind down . The salmon run is over but you still might find one or two late runners , as I did . But there is a big run of Browns now , reports are it's the best in many years . These year fishing on the weather side has been up & down . smaller tribs are dry or they have water , either way it's up or down this year !!!
I was out last week , got a nice big Chinook 49 inches & two (2) very nice Browns 34 & 28 inches . Pics are below !!! ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

21 November 2011
The picture is of me and my friend Ken from PA . I just found out today that he passed away on saturday & I just talked to him on friday afternoon. !!! I meet Ken in the early 90's at Burt Dam . We became very good friends over the years . The picture is of the last trip he made up here to fish spring steelheads 2002 for the first time . He could not believe how good the spring fishing was & why he waited so long to come . He was a good friend & I will miss him alot . He was only 68 !!! He was one of the GOOD GUYS ~~~ As Always my Friend ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

13 November 2011
The fall run with the Chinooks is coming to an end . There are still some Chinooks to chase , but most have spawned & died . We need rain again , this coming week looks like we could get some . The Browns & Steelheads runs are starting to pick up .
I got a pic of a Erie Steelhead from Bill L. , he had a work hard last week to get it . The Erie run has been slow in the last few weeks . They are getting them just not in big numbers .
On Lake Erie , your best pick for a trib would be the Catt . On Lake Ontario and the Western end , It's the Niagara , Burt , & the Oak . Just Remember that Burt & the Oak will be crowded !!!
On Wednesday 16 November I was invited to Bryant & Stratton College Amherst Campus , to Speak in there Distinguished Guest Speaker Forum . Detail in my 30 October fishing report !!!
The pics is of Bill L. Erie Steehead . This last friday I got 45 inch Chinook on 6 lb tippet , pics below . ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

6 November 2011
Well guys & gals I was out on friday . Water in the smaller tribs has droped considerably !! There were some Chinooks around , most have spawned & died already . I did get one nice female 43 inch long on 4 lb tippet and a purple / lavender fly I made, that was it . Pics is below . If we don't get more rain soon the smaller tribs will be dry again . And we will be back to the Lower Niagara , Burt , & the Oak as the only tribs to fish up on this end on Lake Ontario .
As for Lake Erie , all tribs have water but things are slow . They are getting steelies , but just not in big numbers yet !! We do have rain in the forecast for later this week .
Reports are they are getting nice Browns up at Burt . One guy got a 24 lb + at the dam last week . That run will only get better , with the females showing up by mid November to spawn . ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

Chinook Salmon
Oncorhynchus tshawytscha
By Dr. Robert Behnke
The Chioonk is the least abundant species of Picific Salmon . Its common name is derived from the native Chinook people associated with the Columbia River . The name of the species , tshawytscha ( cha-vee-cha ) is based on the mid-18th century manuscript phonetically attempting to translate the common name used by the native people of Kamchatka into German . The Chinook Salmon , know more commonly as the King Salmon , is the largest or second largest species of the family salmonidae . The angler - caught record of 97 pounds 4 ounces exceeds the angler - caught record for Taimen , the Siberian form of Hucho hucho , of 92 pounds 8 ounces . A credible Chinook Salmon of 126 pounds is attributed to a commercial fishery in Alaska . Just alttle about this great fish we all love chase up along the tribs of Lake Ontario . ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~

AMERICA WELL NOT FORGET

A friend of mine sent me an e mail this past week . He told me that my picture is in the new 2010 - 2011 NYS Fishing Regulation Guide . Its on page 68 , so look for it when you get your new license . The pic is funny because it's the World Record smallie that I got . As most of you know I don't own a boat !! I'm a stream & creek fisherman for trout & salmon . But after all these years of sending pics to DEC , it was nice to see I made the regulations guide !! It's also a Line Class World Record

I still remember my first fishing trip at the age 10 in 1957 . It was up on the St. Lawrence River at the Thousand Islands . I caught 23 Bluegills & a Bullhead & Northern Pike . ~~~ As Always ~~~ GOOD FISHING ~~~
